"Watch your mouth, Johnny, I don't need this shit from you today. I have to take my car to the DMV this afternoon, or the registration will expire. You'll just have to ride with Greg." "Great. You know what, I don't know what I was expecting anyway, just forget it. I'd love a little quality time with this month's douche-bag." As the words ran from Johnny's mouth he saw the development of the sight he had dreaded the most since he had been a small child, the quiver in his mother's lip that signaled she was about to break down. The amplification of emotions provided by the stale booze in his system brought an involuntary welling in his own eyes before he beat it back and nervously reached for another cigarette. He ripped the filter off her ultra light to counteract any weakness that she may have detected, and spit the ground up tobacco that stuck to his lip as he puffed to light the cigarette. "I didn't mean it like that, Joanie. I just wish you could take me is all. I know you like the guy, but he's not my first choice for a bon-voyage party, you know?" She sat silently and looked down at the jacket of her book, with its bosomy Indian princess and frontier guy dressed in rawhide pants, and showed no sign of this being a satisfactory jumping off point for further conversation. "Oh, for Crissake, Joanie, I'll walk, it's not that far. Or I'll get a ride from Paul's mom. I'm sure she's got nothing going on today anyway." "That's not the point, and you know it." she said. "You have never been supportive of anything I've tried to do for you children or anyone I've ever been involved with, all you do is bitch about this or bitch about that, and, quite frankly, I'll be glad not to have to listen to it anymore." "I see, the big kiss off is upon us, is it? Well, I'm sick of your shit too, mommy. Pardon me if the door doesn't have a chance to hit me in the ass on the way out." Johnny snatched the beanbag ashtray from the center of the table and turned back to the hall toward his bedroom. "See ya at the next reunion, Joanie."
